Jazmine Sullivan Announces Break From Music

On a post that can still be seen on this very page at the time of writing, I named Jazmine Sullivan's Love Me Back the best album of 2010. That, on top of the fact that its track "Excuse Me" is the best song of 2010 as well, has apparently led her to 'break my little heart' & announce a break from music. Read her announcement from Twitter below:

i'm making an official announcement that i am taking a break from music. i'm trying to figure out who i am... w/out a mike, paper or pen. i promised myself when it wasn't fun anymore i wouldn't do it. and here i am. i'm not saying i won't ever sing again in my life becuz i dont believe that. but in this moment... rt now... i got some things to figure out. i love u all and appreciate u soooooo much. u have no idea how much u've inspired me and fed my ego. but the truth is that i have to believe in me whether you all do or not. and thats what i'm lookin for. that belief in myself. me. I. i love us. thanks for being here for me and riding with me on this journey. let us continue.

The full message has since been taken down, but it was captured with this screencap. The woman was just named Billboard's Rising Star for 2010, following in the footsteps of their most recent Artist of the Year, Lady Gaga. A collaboration with Eminem, their top male artist of last year, just leaked. Now, from the eight-time Grammy nominee, we get this. Obviously I'm upset, but if I might point your attention to the tenth track off her Love Me Back album, "Famous", there might lie a clue as to why she made this decision. It's such a terrible shame that someone as ridiculously talented as both a vocalist & a songwriter as Jazmine would have these kinds of self-esteem issues. If it's a label situation though, besides the fact that J has nabbed themselves one of the most critically-acclaimed R&B artists out there right now, Jazmine is an incredibly consistent success on the R&B charts with four straight top 10 singles (her first four at that), all of which even charted on the Hot 100. On the strength of her biggest R&B hit since her #1 debut single, Jazmine's sophomore album debuted to numbers almost as strong as those of her first album in an extremely crowded marketplace--& with performing solely on 106 & Park during release week. The label hasn't said anything yet, but I certainly hope they realize what they have. I just hope this is a ploy to garner attention to her album (since the label won't schedule any promo on network television) & that it will blow over. Worst case scenario, we can still look forward to seeing her star alongside Ne-Yo in the upcoming George Lucas film "Red Tails".

Album Review: Jazmine Sullivan "Love Me Back"

Jazmine Sullivan blasted onto the scene two years ago with a #1 R&B single & multiple Grammy nominations. Now, to follow up her flawless debut Fearless, Jazmine has the soulful Love Me Back to offer. Her unique voice is immediately engaging, but with impeccable songwriting skills to go along with it, she is the definition of the complete package--& never has Jazmine displayed this fact more than on Love Me Back.

"Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)": Upon first listen, the album's lead single still sounds like a song you've heard & loved all your life. The best part though is that there's something fresh about it too. 5/5

"10 Seconds": The attitude-driven second single is another one that will have you cast under its spell. 5/5

"Good Enough": Jazmine puts her heart & soul into this song, & you can sure feel it! 5/5

"Don't Make Me Wait": One of the lighter tracks on the album, Jazzy will have you lost in her "hoo-hoo"s in this tribute to the Prince-formed 80's girl group Vanity 6. 5/5

"Love You Long Time": She instantly had me with this brilliant jam! It's definitely one of my favorites on the album. 5/5

"Redemption": This one may surprise you. Jazmine tells a pair of dramatic stories by talk-singing through the verses that lead to the subjects begging for 'redemption' in the passionate chorus & the result, quite frankly, is absolutely incredible. 5/5

"Excuse Me": And you thought it was good BEFORE this song..! Jazzy moves away from singing about heartbreak for a moment to SANG one of the best love songs I have ever heard. It's retro, but somehow manages to feel fresh, which is the case of the whole album. I'm gonna go ahead & give the title of Best Song of the Year to "Excuse Me"! 5/5

"U Get On My Nerves" (ft. Ne-Yo): In the sequel to "Bust Your Windows", Jazmine's feelings toward her beau (& vice versa) don't appear to have changed. She's flawless here... the only problem with the track is Ne-Yo! 4.5/5

"Stuttering": It's possible that she has never put her particular voice to better use than she does here. Not only is she the peeerfeeect person to sing the "stu-stu-stuttering"s, but you really, really feel the emotion! Ah, I love it. 5/5

"Famous": Oh, honey! The soul! The passion! I can't get enough!!! 5/5

"Luv Back": Jazmine caps her brilliant sophomore effort off on a high note with this one. I dare you to sit still through this entire song. 5/5

I don't know how I lived without this woman's voice. There's something about this Love Me Back--the way it feels both retro & fresh at the same time--that I just can't wrap my head around. It's unlike anything I've ever heard before, honest, & all I want is more of it! If ever there were a perfect example of improving on perfection, it's this album.

Rating: 5/5 Stars

It's a busy year for holiday specials, so A Very BET Christmas snuck up on me, but it did have a pair of solid performances to offer. Jazmine Sullivan with those runs, all the way down & back up..! Keri Hilson did a nice job too.

Billboard Update

^#1 Album #1 Single^

Susan Boyle's The Gift reigns on the Billboard 200 album chart, while The Black-Eyed Peas debut a little lower down @ #6 with The Beginning following first-week sales of 119,000 copies. Also entering this week is Jazmine Sullivan's Love Me Back @ #15 with 57,000 copies sold. (Fefe Dobson appears to have failed to chart with Joy unfortunately.) Jazmine Sullivan On 106 & Park

Jazmine Sullivan celebrated the release week for her sophomore album Love Me Back with not one, not two, but THREE fantastic performances on 106 & Park! She performed "10 Seconds" before her interview, followed by a performance of "Excuse Me", then a little "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)". Incomparable! Not to mention that, while sounded EXACTLY like the record, she was sick! Ridiculous! And that "Excuse Me" performance..! Legendary!

New Music Tuesday

It's getting closer to Christmas & that means even bigger New Music Tuesdays! First up, we have Jazmine Sullivan, who releases her sophomore album Love Me Back, which features the singles "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)" & "10 Seconds", today. I'm not sure when I'll have time to review it, so in the meantime, I'm just gonna tell you that, December aside, Love Me Back is the best album of the year! Also dropping today (finally) is Fefe Dobson's second release Joy. (It's not really her sophomore album because that would be the unreleased Sunday Love, which featured the standouts "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" & "As A Blonde", both of which have since been recorded by other artists.) Joy includes the singles "I Want You", "Watch Me Move", "Ghost", & "Stuttering", the latter three of which I adore. Finally, we have the DVD/CD release of Beyonce's "I Am... World Tour", which is a definite must-have. Purchase links are provided below as well as via the widget on your right.

The 2010 Soul Train Awards Recap

Jazmine Sullivan & Doug E. Fresh - Medley

Keyshia Cole Tributes Ron Isley

I haven't watched the 2010 Soul Train Awards yet, although I plan to via my DVR as soon as I have the time, but I can already tell you that the highlight of the evening was Jazmine Sullivan's medley of "10 Seconds" & "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)", which she brought out Doug E. Fresh (whom I believe she sampled on "Holding You Down") for. I could listen to her sing live all day! Another impressive vocal showing came from Keyshia Cole, who participated in a tribute to Ron Isley. (Note: I don't think the above video is the whole tribute--I stopped watching when Keyshia was done--but it's the only portion of it I could find in HQ anyway.) As for the winners, my favorite would have to be Ciara's "Ride" for Best Dance Performance! Other include Melanie Fiona for Best New Artist, Usher for Best Male R&B/Soul Artist (tied with Trey Songz...a mess) & Album Of The Year (Raymond Vs. Raymond), Rihanna & Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie" for Best Hip-Hop Song Of The Year, Alicia Keys for Best Female R&B/Soul Artist (shoulda been Monica or Fantasia...) & Record Of The Year for "Un-thinkable (I'm Ready)", & Janelle Monae, who won the Centric Award. View all the winners HERE.

Jazmine Sullivan "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)" Behind-The-Scenes

Jazmine Sullivan recently shot the video for "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)", her first single off Love Me Back (October 5th). The retro song got an equally throwback concept for its accompanying video, which features cameos from a number of '90s stars, including the song's producer Missy Elliott. In related news, you gotta check out the single's brand new Swizz Beatz-helmed remix:
