Mario Album Update

For his fifth studio album, Mario is aiming for "classic" R&B! Good to hear, considering what his buzz single "My Bed" suggested. Whether or not that will make the final cut is unknown (though unlikely... eh, no big loss), but his first official single is titled "The Walls", features Fabolous, was written by Rico Love, & is set to be released in the next two weeks. Also set for inclusion on the upcoming album, which is almost finished & should be released in November (...) or January, is production from The Underdogs as well as a club banger entitled "Roosevelt (Drop A Dime)". I'm so glad to be hearing about another Mario album, especially with names like Rico Love & The Underdogs attached to it! He's really talented & hopefully he'll find success with this project.

Mario Cleared Of Assault Charge

I am pleased to report that the assault charge against Mario has been dropped. While on the witness stand in court, Mario's mother admitted to having been on drugs when she made the allegations against her son that led to his arrest last month. Mario tweeted a statement about being cleared, saying that he is "glad to finally be vindicated" & thanking "everybody who believed in [him]." This doesn't surprise me at all, considering his mother's history of heroin addiction, & I wish the two of them the best of luck with their relationship.

Mario Arrested For Allegedly Attacking Mother

On Friday, Mario was arrested for allegedly attacking his mother in their Baltimore apartment. Mario has been charged with 2nd degree assault after police found damaged property inside the apartment that, according to Mario's mother, was a result of their altercation. He was released on $50,000 bond. I am saddened to hear of this news. While I don't condone Mario's behavior, I can only imagine that his struggle in dealing with his mother's heroin addition, as displayed in his 2007 documentary "I Won't Love You To Death", must've finally boiled over. I'll definitely be keeping Mario & his family in my thoughts & prayers.

Lil' Jon ft. Mario & R. Kelly "Ms. Chocolate" Video Premiere

"Ms. Chocolate", featuring Mario & R. Kelly, is the first official single off Lil' Jon's upcoming album Crunk Rock (June 8th). Mario sounds good on the track... did anybody else notice that he & R. Kelly were dressed exactly the same in the video?! Anyway, not that I personally have a problem with the song, but I wonder what people would think if someone wrote a song about how much they love white-skinned girls...

Mario "Ooh Baby" Video Premiere

"Ooh Baby" is the third single off Mario's fourth album D.N.A. As you can see, J Records, being the fine label that they are, considering their wonderful handling of, say, Monica, Fantasia, &, oh yeah, Mario's careers, gave Mr. Barrett a ridiculously large budget for this video. O_o Now, this is a hot song, so good on Mario for getting a (probably personally financed) video out for it at all, but above all else, I am disappointed. Mario, you're better than this. And no, what I'm referring to has nothing to do with the budget.

106 & Party Performance Highlights

Mario - Medley

Day26 "Imma Put It On Her"

Mario & Day26 were among the performers on this year's 106 & Party special last night. Mario performed his "Thinkin' About You" & Sean Garrett-assisted "Break Up" medley & did a great job, if not for the fact that the poor guy can never remember which part of his cuts in on "Break Up." The remaining four members of Day26 took to the stage to once again perform their half-a-hit "Imma Put It On Her." I would certainly like to see these guys come back with a third album that's everything Forever In A Day could've been, seeing as how they seem to have a supportive label behind them.

The 2009 Soul Train Awards Recap

Toni Braxton ft. Trey Songz "Yesterday"

Keri Hilson - Medley

Ryan Leslie "You're Not My Girl" & Mario ft. Sean Garrett "Break Up"

Melanie Fiona, Estelle, Others Tribute Motown

Fantasia, Others Tribute Chaka Khan

Brian McKnight, Others Tribute Charlie Wilson

The Soul Train Awards made their return last night with a tribute-filled & foolishness-heavy (courtesy of hosts Taraji P. Henson & Terrence Howard) ceremony that also featured both decent performers, including some nice ones thrown into the tributes, & winners alike. (Re: The hosts, they were fine--I actually like Taraji--those who put it all together simply seemed to favor odd skits in place of giving out actual awards...) Toni Braxton opened the show (I love saying that!) with her new single in a classy, yet sassy manner that was almost perfect (yuuup, indeed). Keri Hilson performed "Knock You Down," "Slow Dance," & "Turnin' Me On" in her usual fly way. In a weird segment comparing Ryan Leslie's ivy league education to Mario's upbringing in the hood that seemed to unintentionally diss the more talented latter, the two performed separate sets that were good, if not for the strange chopping of their songs. Estelle & Melanie Fiona joined a slew of others on stage to honor Motown's 50th anniversary, while Fantasia ..passionately screamed.. her part of the Chaka Khan tribute & Brian McKnight sang during the tribute to Charlie Wilson. I can't knock 'em for at least getting several of my favs, particularly the MIA-as-of-late Fantasia, to perform in the tributes. Now, you wouldn't know most of this from watching the show, but Beyonce won three golden trains for Album Of The Year, Best Female Artist, & Song Of The Year ("Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)"). Also, Keri Hilson walked away with the awards for Best New Artist & Best Collaboration with Kanye West & Ne-Yo ("Knock You Down"). Nice job, ladies! HERE are all the winners.

Mario & Gucci Mane Perform "Break Up" On 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards

Even though it's his song, Mario seemingly assisted Gucci Mane in a performance of "Break Up" earlier this week at the 2009 BET Hip Hop Awards. As the performance continues, Gucci gets into one of his own songs (though it might be worth sitting through to watch Plies' chain snap!) This particular one was alright (the first half anyway), but how long was this show--2 hours? Oh, the migraine it would've given me. On the contrary, be sure to pick up Mario's fourth album D.N.A. soon!

Mario Performs On Good Day New York

Mario performed his medley of "Thinkin' About You" & "Break Up" solo on Good Day New York following a short chat with the hosts. Mario sounded excellent & did a great job with this show's 19th century technology. Why is someone who has a huge hit right now & is on their fourth major label album doing this show anyway? Actually, here's a better question: Why can't he sing Sean's verse all the time?! Mario's talent shines through even more on his new album D.N.A., out now.

Mario Performs On Alexa Chung

Mario has finally, at the end of the week after his new album's release, performed in support of D.N.A. He sang "Thinkin' About You," followed by "Break Up" with Sean Garrett on It's On With Alexa Chung. It's good to finally see him doing some promo. Don't sleep on D.N.A. now!

Jay Sean returns to the top of the Hot 100 singles chart this week with his Lil' Wayne-featured "Down," but The Black-Eyed Peas are once again not far behind with "Meet Me Halfway" making its way into the top tier at #9 as Digital Gainer. Also, Usher's "Papers" debuts at #92.

Hurricane Chris ft. Mario & Plies "Headboard" Video Premiere

Mario regretably features on "Headboard," the second single taken from Hurricane Chris' December album Unleashed, which is also assisted by Plies. It's awfully lucky for Mario that I'm a big fan of his because this is almost agonizing to post. Mario sounds good on the chorus, but it's rather embarassing for the other two... are they compensating for something with this foolishness?

Mario "Thinkin' About You" Video Premiere

"Thinkin' About You" is the second single taken from Mario's fourth album D.N.A. Lord hammercy, do I love this song! The Chris Robinson-directed clip is a continuation of "Break Up" & features gorgeous architectural visuals. I also feel that I need to take this moment to state how important it is that you purchase Mario's new album. If you like "Break Up," you will NOT be disappointed.

*UPDATED* Album Review: Mario "D.N.A."

This may be news to you, but Mario is the best male R&B singer out there right now. He hasn't really been recognized since (or even before) his monster hit "Let Me Love You," which is especially tragic for anyone who has ever heard his extremely underrated last album Go, but that all just might change with his fourth album D.N.A. His first single "Break Up" with Gucci Mane & Sean Garrett is his biggest hit in years & rightfully so, even if it's taken much too long for him to make a mark on the charts again. "Break Up" is a hard-hitting urban jam with a fresh vibe that gives the listener a pretty good idea of what to expect from Mario's new album as a whole.

"Break Up" kicks off D.N.A., which then heads straight into second single "Thinkin' About You." The midtempo is right on par with its predecessor & might just have an edge on it due to the fact that the latter features solely Mario's smooth vocals. Next up is the Ludacris-assisted banger "Get Out," which is pretty good. Mario finally slows it down with the excellent "Soundtrack To My Broken Heart." If nothing else convinces you that he has the best voice with the best material for a guy singing R&B these days, this will.

I would describe "Starlight," a product of today's hitmakers The-Dream & Tricky Stewart, as an uptempo--a solid one at that--even though it seems to have a slightly different sound than I'm used to that I can't quite put my finger on. Unfortunately, unlike some of the successful duo's other recent work, the track just doesn't quite connect with me. "Stranded," another slow jam, is an improvement, though it's also not my favorite song on the album, but considering it's the "newest" one of the bunch, it may be a grower. Mario hits it out of the park for me however on "Ooh Baby." This midtempo just has everything you could want in an R&B song. Another winner can be found in the Big Sean-featuring "Before She Said Hi." It has Mario very much in his element, so I won't count it against him that the featured rapper sounds like a (bad) rip-off of Jay-Z.

Mario rides the beat exceedingly well on "I Choose You," one of the best tracks from Stargate in quite a while--as ancient as it may be. Now, I hope I don't sound too redundant, but Mr. Barrett once again proves how great his magical formula of amazing vocals & quality music is with "Don't Walk Away." Before D.N.A.'s title was even finalized, one of my favorite leaks was "I Miss My Friend," so I'm pleased a place was found on the album for it. Besides being yet another smash from the singer, the song excells lyrically, as it hits very close to home for me personally. As for the closer "The Hardest Moment," Mario properly offers up one of his best vocal displays & unique-sounding tracks ever.

There's not a bad song on D.N.A. & most of them are rather great, but this album is especially unique because it is the first one I've ever not even had to wait for to leak, as the entire thing was on the internet already & has been for varying amounts of time that go back quite a long way. In a case such as this, although I'm willing to mostly forgive an artist as talented as Mario, it just comes off as lazy & as if the artist doesn't care enough about their work to keep ANY of it from leaking. I wasn't going to ignore that fact, but with all that said, & especially if you haven't heard the leaks, make sure you check out D.N.A. If you like what you hear, then pick up Mario's previous album Go as well because, although they're close, it's even better.

Rating: 4.5/5 Stars

UPDATE: It seems the final version of "Before She Said Hi" is actually different than the leaked version, so it appears that I owe Big Sean an apology for calling him a Jay-Z wannabe when he's clearly trying to jack the style of Drake. While my opinion hasn't changed of the song, the final version, which may be rerecorded, almost seems less clean & mastered-sounding, though Mario does make up for it with some nice new adlibs.

Preview Mario's "D.N.A."

It's looking more likely that Mario will be releasing his fourth album D.N.A. on October 13th, as snippets of each track on the project are now streaming HERE. As I mentioned before, I've heard all of these songs in full except for one & I can say that D.N.A. is gonna be a solid effort. Can't say it'll be quite as good as Go, but almost!

Mario "D.N.A." Tracklisting

Mario is currently scheduled to release his fourth album D.N.A. on November 3rd because either he hates us (doubt it) or his label dislikes him (that's more like it). In any case, here is the album's tracklisting:

1. Break Up (ft. Gucci Mane & Sean Garrett)
2. Been Thinking About You
3. Get Out
4. Soundtrack To My Broken Heart
5. Starlight
6. Stranded
7. Ooh Baby
8. Before She Said Hi (ft. Big Sean)
9. I Choose You
10. Don't Walk Away
11. I Miss My Friend
12. The Hardest Moment

For those keeping score, this entire album was already on the internet by the time this tracklisting was sequenced. Would that be my ideal situation? Absolutely not. However, I've decided not to stress too much about it, mainly because all of this material is quality. In fact, Mario has had so many leaked tracks that I've been so busy trying to keep up that I haven't overplayed any of them. Sure, I love me some "Promise Land" & "Stuttering"--& Mr. Barrett's verging on residing in the doghouse for disregarding that Brandy track "Boom In It"--but I have them already, so who cares if they make the album or not?! (Don't worry--I'll still be supporting D.N.A. ... & so should you!)
